Fancying a last minute trip to my favourite place in the UK - Weymouth, a place that holds so many fond and wonderful memories for me, I was shocked to see the shockingly high price for a four night hotel stay for a twin bed hotel room for two nights out of season - a staggering £108 for the cheapest that wasn't even on the seafront and the reviews were something you'd be thankful to read! Given the fact it was a last minute trip I would have thought many hotels would have reduced their rates to at least get the rooms filled, clearly not.

On my search for cheap holiday accommodation around the UK, I came across a blogger who had reviewed a tiny converted shed her and her husband had used for their honeymoon accommodation. It got me thinking back to my younger days when I was a child, and when my dad would take me and my siblings on holiday, our choices of accommodation was either our canal boat that we lived, toured and moored on, or my dad's campervan, a massive tent that used to fit us all in, that also got the attention of other campers at the camp site or a good old fashioned tin can (static) caravan stay with Haven Holidays as we used to call them.
Given the cost of everything rising in the UK, but holidays being an important part of life - especially for me, I got to thinking about other ways to holiday without the steep and expensive hotel costs!
1: Canal Boats
Of course I had to mention canal boats - again! If you're a long term visitor of Unique Young Mum, your no stranger to knowing that I grew up on a canal boat, having spent some years of my childhood living on a houseboat - a narrowboat as they're called. Although they take you longer to travel, I can only imagine the fun a weeks long holiday on one of these could bring you, and all the natural beautiful scenery you will see, the fire lit at night time, the bankside river walks to towns you can moor up by and the calm in general of just being near the water.
2: Motorhomes
Motorhomes are literally homes on wheels, and are very easy and convenient to holiday with! A much more modern option than a canal boat, holidaying with a motorhome gives you much more freedom to the places you can go. I would love nothing more than to hire a
new Bailey motorhome, find a parking spot up near a high beach, and watch the tide come in as the waves hit the once dry sand and sea walls. At night time, I'd have a campfire BBQ outside of the motorhome, I'd starglaze hoping to catch a shooting star or two, listening to the natural sounds of mother natures sea waves whilst eating toasted marshmallows - can't do that in a hotel can you!
3. Light Houses
I'm not sure how I feel about this one but I had to include it, considering it was quite a common option when I went on my search for unique holiday accommodation ideas! Whilst I'm not too sure I'd personally feel comfortable doing a Light House sleepover for one night let alone any longer, it's easy to see why this is an experience many would like to do! Combining amazing coastal views, rich maritime history and a sense of isolation which is what puts me off, it's easy to see why so many lighthouses across the UK have been transformed into unique holiday accommodation ideas!
4: Yurts
If you enjoy the idea of camping without all the hassle of lugging around a tent and all the camping equipment you'll need for a camping holiday, then look no further. Perfect for self contained holidays, yurts combine the charm of traditional nomadic living with modern comforts. Unlike conventional tents, they're spacious and often beautifully furnished with cozy furnishings, as well as even wood burning stoves, a small kitchen area and even a private bathroom depending on the yurt you hire. Given their sturdy insulated structures, they're perfect for all year round holiday stays and are perfect for those who want a more
peaceful and private relaxing holiday as they're usually spaced well and far apart from other yurts.
5: Tree Houses
Ever thought about renting out a tree house as a form of holiday accommodation? Nope neither have I sadly! Thankfully I discovered this unusual holiday accommodation idea on my search, and although the lighthouse stay seemed a bit too much, as much as I love tree's I think I'd rather do a lighthouse stay over a tree-house stay! The day I'd stay in the tree-house would be the day the storm brings down the tree for me, so although it's a cool idea, it's a no from me, but still an idea that had to be shared!
Have you ever stayed in holiday accommodation other than the standard hotels, cottages, caravans and other more common accommodations?
Until next time,
Jada x
