Each and every one of us has some level of curiosity about ourselves – it’s natural, it is part of what makes us human. It is that curiosity that leaves us pondering some of the world’s greatest mysteries that, in all likelihood, we will never have a definitive answer for.

From unsolved crimes to government cover-up conspiracy theories, there are hundreds and thousands of cases that remain open. While, of course, not all mysteries are suitable for a youngster to delve into, that doesn’t mean that we can’t at least feed their curiosity by introducing some of history’s most notable anonymities if they hear about them from their peers.

Area 51
Let’s start off with something that has kept UFO enthusiasts enthralled for decades – the secret military airbase that can be found in the Nevada Desert, Area 51. It is thought that hidden within the highly secure facility, extra-terrestrial technology and even life itself is housed.

In mid-1947, the United States Army declared that a weather balloon crashed at a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico. However, that explanation did not wash with many who firmly believed that, while something did crash in Roswell, it certainly wasn’t from this world. It is thought that the UFO was transported to Groom Lake, which would be turned into the secret base that we know today as Area 51.

Many that have worked at Area 51 have claimed that reverse-engineering has taken place on extra-terrestrial craftsaiding Lockheed Martin’s work on projects such as the SR-71 Blackbird and the F-117 Nighthawk. Despite this, there are still many that say that talk of alien technology and lifeforms having ever been present at the base are nothing more than a myth.

Jack the Ripper
In some schools in the United Kingdom, the events surrounding Jack the Ripper are being taught as part of GCSE history lessons. No matter how you feel about teenagers being taught about one of the most heinous of crimes to ever occur on these shores, it cannot be denied that the events of 1888 rocked the city of London to its core.

At least five victims perished at the hands of the killer and, to this day, nobody knows who was responsible. Many experts trace back through the history of Jack the Ripperhoping to trace the killer’s footsteps. Many theories exist as to the identity of the murderer, however, it has been so long since the events took place that nothing will ever categorically prove who was Jack the Ripper. All that we can hope, then, is that lessons are learned from history, discouraging such disgusting violence against women.

Loch Ness Monster
Who hasn’t heard about the Loch Ness Monster? It is one of the most famous mysteries that, while many believe not to be real, strange sightings continue to rear their head casting doubt. The first reported sighting of Nessie dates back to 565AD, although most of the apparent sightings have since been proven to be hoaxed or depicting something other than a monster.

Is the Loch Ness Monster real? We aren’t so sure, although in 2014 there was some excitement when Apple Maps produced an image of a creature that is thought to be around 100ft in length. If you are looking to introduce your son or daughter to the mysteries of the world, this would probably be a good place to start.

Until next time,
