My 99p Summer Fun Post - #my99psummer

99p stores have been running a competition for bloggers during the summer, giving bloggers the chance to show off how much fun they could have with 10 products from the 99p store. I didn't want my post to concentrate on one day, but rather a number of days. I have been on benefits before and have struggled to make ends meet in the past. Finding stuff to keep the children entertained can be difficult and rather expensive.

Being a single parent on benefits, I often had to use my imagination and old items around the house to have fun arts and crafts and imaginary play sessions. I know if its possible to have fun for free, its extremely possible to have fun for a tenner. As soon as the £10 worth of 99p stores vouchers landed on my doorstep, me and Spud went to our local store and got browsing the huge range of items they have.

Did I want my post to be on the garden? Water based activities; bubbles, water guns, water balloons etc, did I want my post to be on arts and crafts? Did I want my post to be on home baking? NO. I wanted my post to be unique, I want to show to parents how much fun you can have with £10, well £9.90 to be precise.

So I picked up 10 different items, some from the same aisle within the same ranges, but each item different from the other. I purchased the following items found below all for a grand price of £9.90, you even get 10p change leftover from £10, enough to buy a 10p lollipop as a treat for being good in town!

1 x Monsters Inc cake baking set.

Water/Bath Time Fun

We used the pirate boat and fishing rod set for Spud to have some water based fun, unfortunatley we don't have a garden, so we can't use a old sand pit for water fun, instead I filled up the bath with some water and let Spud go fishing with some pirates floating the seven sea's of Reading!

Spud has not been real fishing yet, we are waiting for Grandad to take him, so he really enjoyed having a go in the bath and has used the set several time since we brought it, apart from the cotton loosening and needing to be tied again, the set is still going strong! One very impressed mummy and child!

Spud also used and continues to use the boat for bath time fun, he pretends the pirates are going to blow up his smaller boats for their treasure. Spud's imagination with the boat can run wild, and for a fantastic price of 99p, none of us can be any more happy! The 99p stores also host other boats in the same range, just different styles and colours, I need to go pick up some more to add to Spud's collection!

Baking, Creating, Making & Designing Fun!

Everyone get's older and wiser in life, and one thing we all have to learn, well we should all learn at least is cooking. Children love baking and designing cupcakes, so I was extremley impressed to find a number of children's themed baking sets in my local 99p store, Spud being the huge Disney fan that he is, struggled between choosing Toy Story or Monsters Inc but eventually went with Monsters Inc.

Everything you need bar an egg and water is included in the box, you receive paper cake cases, the sponge mix, the icing sugar and the rice paper decorations. I am sure every home has eggs and everyone has water! Of course I did not let Spud use the oven, so an adult should be present to actually cook the cakes, but I let Spud mix the ingredients together and decorate the cakes all by himself. We used the cake mix on a rainy day and enjoyed some delicious home made cakes with a movie on the TV and even a cake each for pudding! The cake mix makes 10 minutes and takes 45-60 minutes from start to finish!

We got some mini silicone moulds as we love these, you can use them to make mini cakes, mini jelly's, ice cubes or to even make your own chocolate shapes, you can even find some fab tutorials online and make some pretty art and craft items with the moulds! You receive one silicone tray with 8 assorted shapes including stars, hearts, diamonds, squares and circles. The tray is heat resistant up to 230°C, it's perfect for the oven, fridge or freezer!

We also purchased a packet of 12 'ice pop makers' with different coloured lids, simply add in some fruit juice or make your own smoothie and freeze them, one set, let your child have a home made ice lolly for a cool down treat or after dinner treat!

Alternatively, you could use the tray without using the lids and use them as jelly mould's, but a spare one for arts and crafts fun and let your child use them to fill with different arts and crafts supplies! Rice in one pot, pasta in the other, beads in another etc.

Keeping Up Education

The UK school summer holidays are 6 weeks long, that's quite a small time for a child to go without any education. Their small brains could get overtook by all the fun of the holidays so I was delighted to find a excellent range of education activity books in my local 99p store. I purchased a Disney Cars addition book to keep Spud practicing his maths. 10-20 minutes a day of brain training can really improve a child's education and what a bargain for 99p!

We also picked up a Disney Cars dry wipe board, we used the board for Spud to practise spellings and subtractions on, as well as using the board for Spud to remember stuff during the week! The board comes with a pen that holds onto the side of the board, and a board eraser enabling your child to use and re-use the board as many times as they want! The board even has a fabric handle to hang it up making it hard not to forget them important task!

Arts & Crafts

Many of my regular readers will know Spud is a fan of arts and crafts, we found a fab range in the 99p store and many of the bits we've currently got in our crafts box. We decided to go with a Disney Cars 2 mini stamping kit that comes with Cars colouring in sheets, 3 stamps, a ink pad and some stickers! The box was such a handy size, it would be fab for long car/train journeys! Or even to pass time at home when the weather isn't that great to play outside or the bank is empty!

Garden Fun

Although we live in a flat and unfortunately don't have a garden, we go to my Dad's house quite often where Spud has his own little flower and vegetable area. He planted a sun flower when he was 2 years old that is now so high, its nearly as tall as my Dad. We was extremely impressed to find a large range of garden items in our local store including children's gardening items. Spud quickly pointed to a grow your own sunflower kit that comes complete with seeds, the plant pot and magic expanding soil! Who said gardening was for adults!? ;)

Treats

Our local 99p store had a large range of food and drink items including some sweet treats, I picked up a multiple bag of Haribo which contained 9 little bags and rewarded Spud with them when he had completed his weekly task. We still have 5 bags left lasting us for another 5 weeks!

That's all folkes, this is my entry into the 99p stores #My99pSummer competition, I hope I have shown you how to have fun filled activities with a £10 budget that can make last over a number of days or even weeks! Buying the moulds and ice pop trays can be used for multiple purposes and I even managed to get Spud some brain training with the excellent education book too.

It is possible to have fun for £9.90 and I have just proved it. When the bank is running low and the weather isn't bright, head down to your local 99p stores with a budget of £10 and see what fun you can create!

I'm off to pinch one of Spud's mini Haribo's, I am aloud a treat too aren't I!? ;)

Back 2 School With The Beano

As a child, I watched Denis the Menace regularly, I remember it being one of the shows frequently shown weekdays after school. I would watch Denis and Nasher on one of their many naughty adventures and giggle along to their misbehaving's! Now Spud is getting a little older, he is getting more into older cartoons and Denis the Menace is one of these cartoons. Spud was delighted to receive some Denis goodies arriving on Nanny's door step when we was on holiday visiting her!

After a long summer break, it’s time to kit-up little menaces as they head back to school with a range of products from Britain’s most iconic comic, The Beano. The Beano team very kindly sent Spud the following two items below from The Beano range. More details can be found below with single product pictures.

Denis the Menace Water Bottle
£5.95 from www.foska.com

This 750ml capacity plastic water bottle is ideal to fill up with water for your children at school. Spud's school allow the children to have water from their bottles when ever they want during the day including lessons. I am not sure about other school procedures so if your child is not able to have water during lessons, this bottle is perfect for sports and lunchtimes!

The bottle has a wide neck which makes it extremely easy to fill with either tap water or bottled water! The bottle is fairly easy to operate as it's a screw cap. Simply unscrew the cap to fill and empty the bottle, and then screw the cap back on ready for your child to sip/drink away.

Denis the Menace A5 Collage Journal
£9.95 from www.bloomsburystore.com

The Beano A5 journal is a plain ruled note book. This vintage style journal features ultra cool comic artwork at both the front and back, on the outside and inside. I'm not sure of how many pages there are but I'd say at least 50, sorry I was too lazy to count!

The journal has an elastic style band that holds the pages of the journal neatly and tight together, your child could even hold snippets or important letters in place within the notebook, with the security of the band enabling anything not to fall out.

If your child has a important bit of homework that need's completing, to make it easier to find a selected page, the journal holds a ribbon bookmark making it easy to find that page your child needs!

Spud likes both of his new Denis items and has already informed me the bottle should be his new water bottle for P.E! Spud has been practising his spellings ready for his first day at junior school next week!

The Beano has some other great Denis the Menace back to school items which I have made into a collage below with the product information, price and websites of where you can buy them from.

Until next time,

Wilko Galaxy Gang Chunky Pencils, 90p for a pack of 6.

Suitable for ages 3+, you receive 6 chunky plain lead pencils in two different designs. Three of the pencil's are star themes and the other three are galaxy themed. Spud found the pencil's very easy to hold due to their thickness, unfortunately we don't have a big enough sharpener to sharpen them, so be warned if you do buy these, they do require a large sharpener as they are not pre-sharpened.

Wilko Galaxy Gang Chunky Felt Tip Pens, £1 for a pack of 6.

Suitable for ages 3+, you receive 6 chunky galaxy design felt tip pens. You receive the following colours; black, blue, green, red, orange and yellow. I was surprised for the price for the price how strong the colours were and Spud enjoyed using them. They have been added to his arts and crafts box for his next crafty adventure.

Wilko Galaxy Notebook A5 Wiro - £1.50 for 80 sheets.

Suitable for ages 3+, the Galaxy Gang notebook has 80 Galaxy Gang lined sheets. The notebook is not hardback, but is perfect for little ones to practise line writing and jotting down any little notes they have! For budding little story fans, for a small price they can create their own story!

Wilko Galaxy Gang Mini Art Pack - £1.75

Suitable for ages 3+, this little art set is perfect for on the go fun. The Galaxy Gang set contains; 8 coloured crayons (black, grey, orange, green, red, brown, blue and yellow), sharpener, eraser, plain led pencil, 12 coloured paint blocks (light green, purple, black, yellow, orange, light blue, brown, dark blue, light brown, red, pink and dark green) and a small paintbrush. The set closes back together and is perfect for car/train journeys bar the paint and is the perfect size to fit into a child's backpack!

Wilko Galaxy Gang Rocket Pencil Case Red - £2.50

Suitable for ages 3+, Spud loved the design on this rocket pencil case, but we found the pencil case a little small, we was able to fit 4 Galaxy Gang pencils in and all 6 of the colouring pens but had little room for any more. This would be the perfect starter pencil case for little ones starting school. The pencil case opens and closes with the use of a zip.

The Wilko Galaxy Gang range starts with prices as little as 50p and the most expensive being the pencil case at £2.50. To view more of the Galaxy Gang range check out the Galaxy Gange stationary page on the Wilko website.

Wilko Friendly Fairies Chunky Pencils, 90p for a pack of 6.

Suitable for ages 3+, you receive 6 chunky plain lead pencils in one design, crowns and stars. Just like the Galaxy Gang pencils, the pencils are easy for children to hold due to their thickness. Unfortunately we don't have a big enough sharpener to sharpen them, so be warned if you do buy these, they do require a large sharpener as they are not pre-sharpened.

Wilko Friendly Fairies Roller Glitter Pens, £1.50 for a pack of 5.

Suitable for ages 3+, you receive 5 chunky Friendly Fairies glitter roller pens. You receive the following colours; pink, orange, green, blue and purple. I had to test the Friendly Fairies range out as Spud understandably refused to touch anything pink and girlie! I wish I was a little girl again, just so I had the excuse to use glitter pens in my life, with that being said, I am still young, so I have added them to my shopping list for when I next go town! The glitter was clearly visible and all the colours are very pretty!

Wilko Friendly Fairies Hardback Notebook A5 Wiro - £1.50 for 80 sheets.

Suitable for ages 3+ this hard back Friendly Fairies note book is just the cutest! The Friendly Fairies notebook has 80 Friendly Fairies lined sheets.
